Summer Field Days 1999, Out and About – Part II

Soon to be removed, the construction of this 1950s corn crib on the Arlyn and Annette Valvick farm shows considerable hand work. Dave Kading offers an observation to Dennis Hansen at the Aug. 18 field day.

Cornell College biology instructor Laura Krause offers tips to Frances Zacharakis-Jutz, who is monitoring gastrointestinal parasites in the sheep herd. At field days sometimes the quickest way to get there isn’t the most glamorous.  At least the hogs don’t get to sit on hay bales.

Highbush cranberries were a feature of Tom Wahl and Kathy Dice’s agroforestry field day Sept. 12.  Turns out the berries of some individual plants taste quite good. Samples of harvest “dos” and “don’ts” for farmers interested in collecting the full premium for organic soybeans.  From the field day at Jeff Klinge and Deb Tidwell’s, Sept. 4.

At Virginia and Marion Moser’s field day, Marcia Miquelon shows a net bag for quick washing of leafy vegetables.  Virginia holds the wash tub.  Marcia is part of Healthy Farmers, Healthy Profits, an initiative from the University of Wisconsin. Daikon radish was the common bond when Japanese extension personnel attended the Moser field day.  The Japanese visitors were quick to contribute packages of miso soup to accompany the vegetable.

Dan Specht shows organic, drilled soybeans at the Sept. 4 field day.  Spring-sown rye was an important weed control aide, and moisture was plentiful in 1999. Open-pollinated and synthetic varieties of corn were featured at the Specht field day.  Laura Krause raises and sells open-pollinated corn.  Walter Goldstein (right), of the Michael Fields Institute, is developing a synthetic variety.

Pasture farrowing provided the backdrop for this discussion at the Dan and Lorna Wilson farm Aug. 28. With onions drying in the barn, Gary Guthrie contemplates his handiwork at the Aug. 22 field day.

These farmers visiting from North Carolina had just found out there was a hurricane at home.  Left to right, Joe Cobb, Tom Clements, Kenny Haines, and RAFI on-farm research coordinator Scott Marlow. As the days shorten, a northwest Iowa garden prepares for the fall season.
