Variations on the “E-Hut” are everywhere this summer!  Mike Natvig shows a removeable pig barrier. Angela Tedesco’s field day sparked discussion of weed management approaches in vegetable production.

Presentation counts – Lonna Nachtigal shows how Onion Creek Farm displays veggies and information at Ames Farmers markets. The winner of the weeding contest at gary and Nancy Guthrie’s field day took home a pie.

Two hundred head of beef move into a new paddock as Dave Lubben describes the rotational grazing system. PFI staffer Gary Guthrie flipped burgers for the board at the July retreat.

At the July 1 field day, Mike Natvig passed around jars of different insect larvae that indicate water quality levels.  Mike monitors the stream in the pasture on the Borlaug farm. At the ISU Student Organic Farm field day, managers Stacy Bastian (center left) and Mark Garrison (center right) introduced the farm.

Rick Hartmann described a squash trial at the Student Organic Farm. “Has this happened to you?”  At the Student Farm field day, Leah Bowman of Gray Wagon Produce showed what squash vine borers can do overnight.

A new, open feedlot with a concrete apron was part of the field day at Dave and Lisa Lubben’s. Mark Golightly explained the role of honeybees at Angela Tedesco’s field day.

Gary and Nancy Guthrie served home-made ice cream to fellow garlic grower Joe Lynch. At the Guthrie field day, PFI communications director Nan Bonfils and hubby Don Adams tried out the hammock.
